THE BASICS OF ROCKET LAUNCH
At a Cub Scout Rocket Launch, we fire off rockets that are packed with a parachute so they can be retrieved. You will need at least one rocket and as many “engines” as the number of times you’d like to launch the rocket(s).
Rockets come in 2 basic styles, snap together or glued. Read carefully so you know what you’re getting.
You need to buy:
One rocket
Paper Wadding
Engines (come in packages with multiple engines and ignitions)
Glue
Most scouts choose an Estes brand rocket. Rockets and engines may be available from many vendors: Hobby Lobby, Scout Shop, Amazon, local hobby/model shops.
Here are links to the rockets page at: Hobby Lobby /Amazon
The rocket you choose will come with assembly instructions. You will glue it together according to the instructions. Pay attention to the parts that do NOT get glued. Some part needs to open/come apart so the parachute can come out. Some rockets are paintable and some have stickers.
Rockets are reusable (you reload the parachute with fresh wadding and a new engine) so they can be fired off and recovered repeatedly. You use a new engine for every launch.
If you purchase 4 engines, you will get 4 launches.
When choosing engines, select from the specific sizes that are listed on your rocket's package. Rocket engine power is indicated by the letter in the engine size. A is low. B is a good size. C is the maximum we are allowing at launch. A or B is a good size for most of the rockets the Scouts make.
You may select a rocket kit that comes with a launchpad and launch controller if you like the rocket in the kit. However the Pack will have launch pads and controllers set up for everyone to use. You only need the rocket, paper wadding, and rocket engines.. The Pack will accept any launchers or controllers that you want to donate so we can continue to support this event.
ROCKET RULES AND INFORMATION
Rockets MUST be assembled, glued, painted, etc. BEFORE coming to the event. Do not bring an unfinished kit to the event. There isn't enough time to construct the rocket and have it dry and ready to fly. We will not launch a rocket with wet paint or glue or missing or broken fins.
We are on a Special Event Permit from the Forsyth County Parks Dept. Please adhere to these rules so we don't have any problems with stray rockets and they'll let us do it here again.
Only SINGLE STAGE rockets allowed
Recommended engine size is "B". Maximum allowed engine size is "C"
You may wish to bring a chair or blanket
Pack will have a Launch area set up with three (3) launch pads and launch controllers. You don't need to buy these items. The Pack will accept any launchers or controllers that you won't need so we can continue to support this event.
Participants may bring their own snacks and drinks. The Pack may provide some refreshments if we have some remaining from fall camping.
The Rocket Launch is always one of the favorite events of our Scouting year so sign up for a slot on the Signup Genius and come shoot off your rocket with Pack 805.
